2024 Outlook for the Distribution Sector

Written by Jeremy Bess | Oct 12, 2023 5:00:46 PM

As the US and global economies navigate the back side of the business cycle, it is imperative for distributors to gain a comprehensive understanding of the dynamics unfolding in preparation for the anticipated contraction in 2024. Distributors must be well versed in how various markets are expected to perform, the duration of the contraction, and the escalating risks that loom on the horizon.

For many distributors, the deceleration in demand, which commenced in 2022, led to excess inventory. This surplus inventory has exerted downward pressure on prices as businesses adjust to the shifting landscape. It is incumbent upon distributors to ascertain when the resurgence in demand is likely to occur and when their shelves should be adequately stocked to meet it.

Disinflation and, in some cases, deflation have become characteristic of a significant portion of the US economy. These trends have the potential to erode profit margins. Forward-thinking companies need to proactively explore opportunities to protect their margins; such opportunities include accentuating their competitive advantages to maintain price levels.
