2025 and Beyond: Winners and Losers by Market

Tune in to this Business Series Webinar with ITR Senior Forecaster Connor Lokar as he reviews the winners and losers by market over the next few years.

The US economy is never a one-size-fits-all entity, but the performance disparity across individual markets is particularly apparent today. In past business cycles, our audiences would frequently react to our analysis and outlook for US Real GDP with nodding heads. The GDP data was affirming what the businesspeople in our audiences were experiencing.

These days, however, businesses tend to fall into camps of faring either much better or much worse than the headline GDP numbers would imply. We do see the nodding heads once we delve deeper into industry-specific trends, but not before. This is certainly the case this business cycle, which has been shaped by big movements in fiscal stimulus, the money supply, interest rates, and prices, as well as sizeable government spending programs (such as the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and the Inflation Reduction Act), geopolitical instability, AI adoption, and more.

The scope and severity of these pressures means that some markets will be relative winners and others relative losers. If you are in a business that has benefited from the above trends – such as a firm involved in data center construction in some way – you might be incredibly busy. If, however, you are a firm in the machinery industry, for example, which is facing an inventory glut, odds are you will be feeling decidedly less optimistic.

It is also important to note that this performance gap is not immutable; it changes over time with the business cycle. The winners of 2024 may not be the winners of 2025 and beyond. At the January Insider™ webinar, ITR Economics Senior Forecaster and Speaker Connor Lokar will provide an analysis of which markets are poised for outperformance and which are more likely to underperform. Connor will include insights about the drivers of these disparities, and he will offer practical business advice so you can best position your company for profitability.
