Europe: East and West

For us economists, it is interesting to look at how the layperson perceives the economy versus what the numbers are showing. Ask most people, “Which economy is more important: China or Europe?” and you will get a lot of thoughts on China’s economy.

However, the data shows that the EU and UK combined make up over 20% of global economic activity, versus 16.8% for China (2023 data). Both Europe and China are key parts of the global economy, but perhaps Europe – a critical hub of global economic activity – does not get the airspace it should.
